Bonolo Helen Chepape was born in a dusty mining town of Rustenburg in the Northwest, with strong Pedi cultural roots and a fascination for storytelling. Bonolo is a graphic designer by profession with a love for illustration and design.

Her artworks are African Contemporary suggesting a new kind of Africa, which is optimistic about the future. Many of her illustrations and paintings play on the mystical spiritual world of women. These figurines are often portrayed as heroin’s or mystical beings of the spiritual realms, playing on the motif that women are powerful, complicated beings with super natural powers that extend from the universe. Bonolo likes to celebrate women in her work, and  explores different mediums but digital is her forte specifically illustrating, which she absolutely loves.

A love for bright, pop colours is evident in the pieces she creates that resonate with her cultural background and childlike mind.

Bonolo takes inspiration from her surroundings and all areas of design such as popular culture, fashion, hair, architecture and photography of the everyday women she meets.
